Two worlds connected in Art
Portrait-Project Sastrawan and de Vries in commission of the Indonesian Embassy in The Hague:
The mission was to create an intense cultural dialogue between an Indonesian and Dutch artist in Art. Our way to do this was very basic. In portraying each other as artists we looked closely behind each other’s worlds, faces and way of being as artists.

Savitri:
All in all, I learnt a lot from this project and Vera for the techniques also the cultural dialogue between us. To be honest, I never really knew how to draw a person in the ‘right’ way, now I realize drawing or painting a portrait is so much more than what you see. You see a world behind a face also the same as when you’re drawing something expressive, it’s full of spirituality and passion and expressing oneself or even the person in the portrait. I’ve stepped a bit backwards from my usual expressive maybe Indonesian way of painting and I felt good about tasting the academic European way of painting. I am more confident in making portraits my own way now.
Vera:
It was a great joy working with Savitri Sastrawan. As an Indo-European artist, so far working and living in Holland, it gave me the opportunity to really look in a mirror. Looking closely ‘at’ and ‘behind’ the face of a young Indonesian artist I could look back into my cultural roots in many (un)expected ways. Artistically it felt like coming home into my own face, body and handwriting and connect my spiritual life-portrait with my mother who was born on Semarang-Java. The chance to be able to connect my cultural and artistic heritance of Indonesia, with Indonesia as a reality in the present is very precious to me.

Savitri Sastrawan, een jonge, veelbelovende Balinese kunstenares uit Denpasar, werkte o.a. aan een serie expressionistische portretten in een culturele dialoog met Indo- kunstenaar Vera de Vries. De Vries en Sastrawan werken vanaf 5 april tot 5 juni 2011 in een Haags Atelier van Stichting Ruimtevaart in Nederland en ronden hun project af van 19 juli tot 19 augustus op Bali te Denpasar en Kuta Indonesië, in een presentatie aan the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design , te Denpasar Bali Indonesia.

-'Museum Geelvinck' Keizergracht 633 Amsterdam vanaf 20 mei t/m 17 juni.
-'Stichting Ruimtevaart' Loosduinseweg 9 Den Haag tijdens kunstmanifestatie 27 mei en 28 mei.
-‘NIK & CO’ Uit de Kunst manifestatie’ locatie 'MOOI' Julianalaan 22 Bilthoven vanaf 27 mei t/m 4 juni. Zaterdag 28 mei vanaf ong. 14.00. tot 16.00 zullen Sastrawan en De vries een onderdeel uit de culturele dialoog beeldend presenteren in te MOOI Julianalaan 22 Bilthoven. Zij zullen muzikaal ondersteund worden door Xavier Boot www.xavierboot.nl
